For an MSP business to grow and succeed, it needs the whole organization to systematically and effectively work together as one team. With great teamwork and collaboration, productivity and profit increase and you have a healthier work environment. However, achieving teamwork is not easy. People with different skills, knowledge, and background who are working together may encounter several challenges and issues.
Caesar, the hero of the Planet of the Apes trilogy knew how critical teamwork is to the survival of his ape colony. We know that “Apes! Together strong!” is Caesar’s powerful war cry and that it expresses a basic element for any group to succeed amidst trials. Caesar teaches the apes that they cannot take the humans one on one because they are obviously outgunned, but they need to stick together. But just like any organization, teamwork was not easy for him either because he also has defectors from his kind.
So how can Caesar’s leadership help shape teamwork in the workplace? Here are some tips to foster a successful team identity.
Lead by example
To have a good team to work together, you need a leader a team can confidently follow. The other apes look up to Caesar and they obediently follow his orders because he leads by example. You need to show the type of diligence and hard work you want to see from your employees. Your team members can easily live up to the expectations you set for them when they see that you adhere to the same standard. Promote equality and subject yourself to the same rules and guidelines they are subjected to.
Have clearly defined team objectives
Without a clear goal for the team, the members will work aimlessly and lack motivation. So, it is critical that all employees know the short-term and long-term goals of your MSP business and the goals for the individual teams. This should be clearly stated together with the outline of the roles and responsibilities of every member of the team. When this is established, then communications become streamlined and teamwork becomes purposeful. Also, the goals act as motivation for the employees and as a basis for feedback and performance assessment. In the movie, their main goal was to get to the place across the desert because it is ideal for the apes. They went through difficult challenges but in the end, they were able to achieve this goal.
Build effective communications
When your team members are too scared to speak up or that there is no clear communication procedure, confusion, misunderstanding and high employee turnover happen. It is necessary that your organization develop your own communications policy and procedures to avoid miscommunications. Build also a culture in the office where employees are encouraged to share their opinions, suggestions and honest feedback. Have regular meetings and use constructive comments instead of just criticizing your team members.
Team up with the competition
When the apes were escaping at the end of the movie, Red, the gorilla who betrayed Caesar saves Caesar’s life by killing Preacher with a grenade launcher. MSPs can learn that you need to stand together to protect your industry from over-regulation and taxation in order to make sure favorable laws are passed. For example, getting the government involved in the attempt to solve the current drought of IT tech workers by establishing programs and scholarships to lure the techies.
The film pits man against ape in the turf war of the ages. Facing an enemy that is much more developed than they, the apes learn that to win the war, they will have to use their brains and stand together. Teamwork is one of the most basic lessons your MSP business needs. Having a good understanding of this concept is vital for any functioning team. And what is a company but a team. Having a well-oiled machine will improve efficiency and will make sure to keep everyone on the same page.
