There comes a time when an MSP company must dismiss an employee, avoiding holding onto them for too long. Of course, some managers struggle with letting employees go, while others find it to be a simple process. However, there are a few obvious signs that can help an IT provider determine whether it’s time to dismiss an employee:
Lack of Care
The first obvious sign that it’s time to dismiss an employee is when they begin not to care about their job performance or duties. This type of apathy can easily spread from one employee to the next and wreak havoc on the entire organization. Instead of disrupting the chemistry of the office, it’s much more beneficial to get rid of an employee before their negative attitude spreads even further and causes even more damage.
Continually dealing with employee arguments in the office can be mentally draining for any MSP company. Instead of being productive, employees are always fighting with each other, which can result in poor relationships and make it very difficult to work together as a team. If you notice an employee that’s consistently showing these characteristics, it’s best to dismiss them before they cause irreversible damage in the office.
Decline in Productivity
An IT provider must always look for ways to increase productivity, and a disgruntled employee can severely limit the potential of an IT company. For example, if an employee is already looking for a new job, they can lose focus on their current work and severely disrupt their productivity. If the lack of production continues, it may be in the best interest of the company to dismiss an employee before their output continues to decline and they become a liability to the company.
Too Much Drama
An unhappy employee is typically at the center of any drama and is always causing issues in the office. Of course, drama can appear in all different types of fashions, whether it’s talking behind an employee’s back or spreading false rumors. Instead of putting up with this disruptive behavior, it’s much more effective to have a private meeting with the disgruntled employee and let them understand that this type of behavior will not be tolerated. If the behavior continues, it’s time to fire this employee and find someone that will be satisfied with working at an IT support company.
Many times, an employee will begin making unrealistic demands, as they feel that they have nothing to lose. For example, they may ask for a significant pay raise, even though they haven’t been working with the company for a very long time. While, it’s important to always listen to each employee, sometimes it may be best to recognize that an employee is making unreasonable demands because they’re on their way out the door and aren’t afraid of repercussions or unreasonable demands.
Getting rid of disgruntled employees is never easy, but it’s nearly always in the best interest of an MSP company. Instead of continually dealing with a bad attitude or constant drama, it’s better to meet with the employee to change their behavior— or it’s time for them to find another company. Hiring the right employees for the job is not an easy process, and sometimes a manager will make the mistake of hiring a worker that’s the wrong fit for the culture of the company. However, having the courage to move on from an employee can help improve productivity and chemistry in the entire office. Instead, of waiting until it’s too late, make the decision that’s in the best interest of an IT provider.
