Your MSP company has employees who are more ambitious than others. You need to reward that ambition. Sometimes, incidentally, you’ll have management personnel who feel as though initiative represents something negative. It’s not that they’re against change or contribution; it’s that they run into initiative from ambitious employees who have yet to reach the level they’re at in their mind. Ultimately, such contributions end up doing more harm than good. But this isn’t the case with every employee. In fact, someone in your company who is ambitious enough to create new applications or workflows is likely going to have some kind of breakthrough in the future. If you encourage them, you’ll be able to capitalize on it. Accordingly, following are a few ways you can help facilitate ambition in a qualitative way:
- Establishing mentor positions
- If you find a skill, develop it
- Allow the ambitious a taste of what you do
Establishing Mentor Positions
Your MSP company will have trainers who help on-board new team members; but after novices have been inducted, there isn’t always a resource for them. In terms of ambitious personnel, mentor positions can serve two functions. One, ambitious employees on the cusp of advancement within your organization can tread water as a mentor “in the middle” between, say, sales and managing a sales team. Two, they can scout other ambitious personnel.
If You Find a Skill, Develop It
Oftentimes, ambitious workers will have a skill separate from that which they were hired for. Don’t neglect those skills, help develop them.
Allow the Ambitious a Taste of What You Do
Apportion your duties to ambitious second-in-command types so they learn to understand requisite operational needs, and whether their abilities truly fit where their ambitions lead.
Fully Activate Employees
Don’t punish initiative or ambition, learn to harness it. If you funnel the ambitious into mentor positions, develop their skill sets, and help them determine if they are appropriate for the positions of their ambitions, you enable greater optimization across your MSP company.
