Have you ever made decisions for your MSP company that you totally regret? Do you wish that you could turn back time just to correct such mistakes?
Well, in the Disney film, Meet the Robinsons, Wilbur Robinson time travels to the past as he looks for the thief of his father’s other existing time machine – the Bowler Hat Guy. He then meets Lewis, the young inventor who was left at an orphanage by his mother. Throughout their journey, they see how their actions in the past affect the outcome of the future.
Your MSP business can learn from this film many valuable lessons especially about how our decisions and mistakes, no matter how small or big, have rippling effects beyond your knowledge and control. This concept is called the Butterfly Effect. It is the idea that small things can have non-linear impacts on a complex system. One example in the movie is that Lewis kept his roommate Goob up every night because of his inventing. This caused Goob to lose his little league game, not get adopted, lived a miserable life and became the villain, the Bowler Hat Guy. He stole the time machine and changed the future of mankind into a robot-controlled world. This goes to show how important planning and decision-making is to the company. So, before your tiny business mishap turns into a business catastrophic event, take the following tips to heart.
Meditate on your decisions before making them
Before making any decisions in the business and acting them out, stop and think about its effects. Gather complete data that would lead to a better and informed decision. Process the data according to their context and meaning and analyze and validate them. Listen also to your gut instincts. Your intuition is a helpful tool in the business when it is refined and improved.
Analyze the problem from different perspectives
Do not rely on your own analysis and seek help and advice from mentors and members of your team. They can help you see all the variables that could affect the process and give valuable insights from their own experience and perspective. Test for biases and perform a situation analysis. Assess the risks involved and whether it is the right thing to do.
Above all, try to learn from your mistakes and do not allow the past mistakes to keep you from innovating and going out of your comfort zones. Running a business takes perseverance and if you give up after a failure, you will never reach your fullest potential. Take away the most important lesson from Meet the Robinsons and that is to “keep moving forward”.
When Lewis meets his future self as Cornelius, his older self tells him that the future is never set in stone and what matters is what he does in the present. This teaches your MSP business that no matter how awesome you envision your company would be in the future, it would not come to fruition without making wise decisions in the present. And though plans are efficiently made, they are still made up of constants and variables that could work in favor of you or against you. Have backup plans in place and learn from the mistakes of the past.
